The winter solstice, December 21st, is the shortest day and the longest night of our year. This time is celebrated for many reasons, but we are celebrating the solstice because of the bees.
The significance of the solstice for honeybees is that's the first day of the year that the queen may become more active again in their colony. The bees use the sun as a calendar. When the days start getting longer after the solstice, the bees start preparing for the coming season!
Several pollinator species are at risk of extinction in Canada. Wildlife Preservation Canada (WPC)’s pollinator initiative is a nationwide multi-species recovery effort that aims to save these important insects from extinction. Proceeds of the event will go to Wildlife Preservation Canada's bumble bee breeding program.
No physical tickets will be sent out. You will receive an email before the event with detailed instructions on how to get to the event and where to check in. We plan to make this event as safe and accessible as possible. Masks will be provided and are encouraged. If you are sick, stay home.

Who is Humble Bee? Humble Bee is a local apiary based in Hamilton, Ontario. We have over 200 hives across the city, which are organically managed to produce sustainable bee colonies, and local honey and beeswax products.
Why the Winter Solstice? The solstice is a key event in the beekeeping world. The solstice is the longest night of the year, which means that moving forward, the days will begin to get longer again. This change of seasons triggers the Queen bee to start laying, and for the bee colony to rebuild. December is when the colony is at its smallest, so the Winter Solstice represents renewal and the new season.
What is the Wildlife Preservation ‘Bumble Bee Recovery Project’? Although Bumble Bees are not the species most beekeepers work with, the loss of these incredible pollinator species impacts us all. Wildlife Preservation focuses on captive breeding to rebuild populations which are endangered and special concerns.
