Golden West Bees, operated by Randy Oliver and his sons Eric and Ian, has been a prosperous migratory beekeeping business in the California foothills for years. Each season, they transport their hives for almond pollination and also sell a thousand nucs each spring. Remarkably, this has been achieved without any synthetic miticides since 2001.

They breed only from queens whose colonies are very gentle and healthy, exhibited above average honey production, and proved strong for almond pollination.

It should be noted that while there may not be a queen that is completely resistant to mites, the offspring of the queen and the drones she is mated with may be more mite resistant. The Olivarez family clarifies that they have not yet genetically engineered their bloodlines for mite resistance, therefore they do not make any claims about their stock being "mite resistant." However, currently, there is a 50% chance that their queens could produce mite-resistant colonies, a percentage that is expected to increase over time. It is important to keep in mind that even colonies that are only partially resistant require less treatment.
