While the Langstroth Hive was originally designed to use 10 frames, we find it's much nicer to work a hive with only 9 frames; no more struggling to get the 1st frame out or the last frame back in. You can work the hive more gently, which means fewer stings for you, and no more bees getting 'rolled' as you pull out the 1st frame.
